Skaters in our Special Olympics programs train on an integrated basis in programs at their skill level, with Special Olympics coaches. Participants can enjoy speed skating as a recreational activity, and for those interested in competition, there are Special Olympics classes at local and regional short track and long track meets as well as Special Olympics events at the provincial and national level.
We introduced a Special Olympics/Unified Sport Relay program during the 2020-2021 season. Participants do not need to have a speed skating background, they just need to be able to skate.
There are three levels to the regular program:
Special Olympics Intro is offered on an integrated basis with our Off to a Good Start programs at 6:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This includes learn to skate and learn to speed skate programs.
Special Olympics Intermediate is a speed skating program offered on an integrated basis with the Skills Development 1 program at 7:10 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This program is for skaters who have been introduced to speed skating in our Special Olympics Intro program, or who have previous skating experience.
Special Olympics Advanced is a speed skating program for skaters with strong skating skills and preferably some speed skating training. It is offered on an integrated basis with our Skills Development 2 program at 7:45 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Participants who do not have their own speed skates can use speed skates from our inventory for these programs.
