Skaters in our Special Olympics program train on an integrated basis in programs at their skill level, with Special Olympics coaches. Participants can enjoy speed skating as a recreational activity, and for those interested in competition, there are Special Olympics classes at local and regional short track and long track meets as well as Special Olympics events at the provincial and national level.
We are also introducing a Special Olympics/Unified Sport Relay program during the 2021-2022 season. The first event will be on Saturday, December 11,2021. A second event will be scheduled in the winter or early spring.
There are three levels to the regular program:
Special Olympics Learn to Skate and Learn to Speed Skate are offered on an integrated basis with our Off to a Good Start programs at 6:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These programs were not offered in 2020-2021 season due to Covid-19 restrictions. They will be offered during the 2021-2022 season.
Special Olympics Skills Development is a speed skating program for skaters with strong skating skills and preferably some speed skating training. It is offered on an integrated basis with our Skill Development program at 7:10 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Participants who do not have their own speed skates can use speed skates from our inventory for these programs.
A voluntary contribution of $50 to help cover the program costs is requested, but not required if it is not affordable. When the registration form is submitted, you will be linked to a payment page. If you wish to make a contribution, you can do that through the page, but registration is complete as soon as the form is submitted and you can exit the payment page without completing it.
