Skaters in our Special Olympics program train on an integrated basis in programs at their skill level, with Special Olympics coaches. Participants can enjoy speed skating as a recreational activity, and for those interested in competition, there are Special Olympics classes at local and regional short track and long track meets as well as Special Olympics events at the provincial and national level.
There are three levels to the program:
Special Olympics 1 includes learn to skate and learn to speed skate level programs and is offered on an integrated basis with our Off to a Good Start programs. This program will not be offered in the fall of 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. During the fall of 2020 we will evaluate the feasibility of restarting these programs for the winter session.
Special Olympics 2 is a speed skating program for skaters with good skating skills and possibly some speed skating training. It will be offered on an integrated basis with our Skills Development 1 program at 6:30 PM on Thursdays, starting October 8.
Special Olympics 3 is a speed skating program for skaters with strong skating skills and preferably some speed skating training. It will be offered on an integrated basis with our Skills Development 2 program at 7:10 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting October 6.
Participants who do not have their own speed skates can use speed skates from our inventory for these programs.
