Competitive Programs Outline

Please see the table below for a summary of the three program streams in the Competitive Program.

Entry to the Competitive Program must be approved by the Head Coach. 
See the Program Standards page for program entry standards. 
On entry to the program, participants must complete
the Participant Agreement and submit it to the Head Coach.

Speed Skating Ability
Fundamental skill
Intermediate skill
Advanced skill
Development Stage
Learning to Train (aged 9-11) and Training to Train (aged 11-15).
Training to Train (aged 11-15) and Learning to Compete (aged 15-18).
Post PHV Training to Train (approximately aged 13-15), Learning to Compete (aged 15-18), and older.
Aspiration
Begin formal competition.
Attend two or more formal competitions and national age class championships
Attend two or more formal competitions and national junior and/or senior championships.

Performance
No expectations.

Season Length

Training per Week
2 structured short track practices per week as well as special opportunities for dryland and long track.
Up to 4 structured sessions per week: primarily short track, dryland, and strength training, along with opportunities for long track and inline skating.
Up to 8 structured and self-directed sessions per week including: primarily short track, long track, strength training, and dryland, along with opportunities for inline skating, and cycling. The amount of short track and long track will depend on specialization.
Sport Participation
Participate in several other sports and activities.
Participate in 2 or three other sports or activities.
Participate in other sports but begin to specialize in short track or long track.
Equipment
Rent and care for short track skates and safety equipment.
Own or rent and maintain short track, long track, and other training and safety equipment.
Own or rent and maintain short track, long track, and other training and safety equipment.

Many thanks to Councillors Sam Austin, District 5; Lorelei Nicoll, District 4; and Tony Mancini, District 6, for their support of our Safety Pad Fundraising Campaign.  Thanks to these Councillors, we have been able to order 29 new full safety pads and 4 extra-deep bumper pads to ensure the safety of skaters during practice and competition.
