Speed Skate Loans and Rentals

SPEED SKATE LOANS AND RENTALS

Viking Adjustable Speed Skates
The club maintains an inventory of speed skates for loan or rental.  There are two types of skates available.  The Viking adjustable skates are suitable for beginning skaters and are available only in sizes 28-31 or 32-25.  Larger sizes are available only in the regular speed skates.

The use of club skates is included in the registration for Off to a Good Start programs.  Skates used in this program are returned to the equipment room after each ice session.  If they wish and sufficient inventory is available, skaters in these programs may rent speed skates for the season at an additional cost.

Skaters registered in the Skills Development or Competitive programs should be wearing regular speed skates.  It is a good idea to rent skates while the skater's feet are still growing, or when new to the sport.

There is a limited inventory of skates available for rental, so skaters wishing to rent skates for the season should attend an early fitting session.

Conditions of rental:
  • Renter must be a club member in good standing, registered for a program during the current speed skating season.

  • The rental period for the adjustable speed skates runs from the skater's first ice session of the season to March 31.  The fee is $50.

  • There are two rental periods for the regular speed skates.  For most skaters who will be skating just during the regular season, the fee is $100 for the period from late September to March 31.  For more advanced skaters who may be participating in competitions or training camps outside the regular season, the fee is $125 for the period from mid-July to mid-April.

  • Skate rental fees are to be paid in full before removing skates from the arena.

  • The rental fee includes hard guards, which must be worn whenever walking in the skates off-ice, and soft guards (soakers) which are used for transportation and storage.  Skates must not be stored with the hard plastic guards on the blades.

  • Skaters or a parent must attend a skate sharpening and maintenance demonstration if they have not been previously trained.

  • Skates must not be taken to commercial skate sharpeners as their sharpening equipment will damage the blades.

  • Skaters must care for skates according to prescribed club procedures. A club sharpening kit will be available for use at the arena to sharpen skates.  Club personnel will assist renters who have not yet been trained in sharpening.

  • Skates must be returned to the club by the end of the rental period.

  • Skaters must accept responsibility for any loss or damage beyond normal wear and make good such damages.

  • No changes are to be made by the renter to the size adjustment on the Viking adjustable skates.  Adjustments are to be made only by club personnel, as the mechanism is easily damaged and cannot be replaced.  If it is damaged by the renter, they will be responsible for replacing the skates.

  • All skates, guards and soakers must be returned at the end of the rental period. At that time the skates should be clean, sharpened and contain proper laces.  Lost guards or soakers must be replaced.

For inquiries about skate rentals, please contact the club at info@dcspeedskate.ca.

Payment for skate rentals is collected with your registration fee through the IceReg program.  We recommend that you book a fitting session as soon as possible.  Information about skate fittings is available at this link.  The rental agreements are available at this link for the Viking adjustable speed skates and this link for the regular speed skates.  Please print and sign the agreement and bring it with you to your fitting session.
